Types of Races

There are four types of races raced in the UK. The most common ones are:

Graded Races – the grades refer to the greyhounds racing the race. The grades range from 1 to 10 with 1 being the highest. The measurement ranks the greyhound’s ability

Open Races – open to all dogs of different grades. Usually only the better greyhounds race open races as the prize money is generally greater

Two other less frequent races are:

Puppy Races – contests of young greyhounds, relatively new for racing.

Handicaps – races where greyhounds of different grades race against each other. The less able greyhounds run a shorter distance as their traps are out closer to the finish lines. There are not many handicap races in the UK.
