Only best-bred Greyhounds will usually win races so the dogs used for breeding are mostly champions of the past. In order to create fresh blood lines, the importing of champions is common.

It is not really agreed what the importance of the bitch used for breeding. Although there have been some exceptionally successful brood bitches used for breeding, there have also been greatly successful stud greyhounds so this argument is still unsettled.

The number of puppies produced from each litter ranges to as many as 14 or 15, with any combination of bitches and greyhounds possible.
